Annnnd we’re back! It seems like only yesterday we were trying to fit Black Sheep’s beast of a burger in our mouths, and waiting in line for forty-five minutes at Vandal (my biggest regret of last year was trying and failing to get my hands on that Wake N’ Bacon!), but somehow Halifax Burger Week has snuck up on us again, and my body is ready.
There is around 140 options this year, which makes me a little nostalgic for the 59 burger year that was 2015. Not because I don’t love being surrounded by a plethora of delicious burgers, but it was just easier to decide which ones to try (I actually tried them all that year but that’s a whole other story). Luckily, restaurants were kind enough to fire up the grills a bit early for me so I could try out some of them ahead of schedule, and report my findings back to you!
For Part 1 of the 2019 Preview Series, I cover what HopYard, Little Fish, and Tempo will be cooking up, come March 28th!
(Also, if you haven’t checked out all of the #HFXBurgerWeek giveaways I’ve been doing over on Instagram (@lifeofburgers), be sure to go check them out and win yourself some Burger Week burgers!)
Halifax Burger Week is now over for another year, and the city is stuffed to the brim with the thousands of burgers that have been consumed. With beef, chicken, fish, veggie, sausage, lamb, boar, and even kangaroo available as options this year, the choices were abundant and I think it’s safe to say that Haligonians were very satisfied with the turnout!
Delicious sauces and pasta (both deep-fried and not) seemed to be some popular topping choices this year, and a lot of the 95+ restaurants really stepped up with some amazing, original burger compositions.
This was easily the hardest year I’ve had thus far trying to decide my favourite burgers of the week. I got to try 31 of the options this year (12 previews and 19 during the week) and I kept going back and changing my choices for both the Top 3 as well as the 10 Honourable Mentions. There were many burgers that got left off this list that I really enjoyed, but there just wasn’t enough spots for them all. Basically, what I’m trying to say is Halifax knocked it out of the park for Burger Week 2017!
Burger Week is now over halfway done, and it doesn’t seem like Halifax is slowing their consumption down anytime soon. With the end of the week in sight, I have been adding more and more burgers to my list, to the point of not knowing how I will make time, or stomach space, to try them. However, I will be pushing until the end of Day 7 to make sure I get to experience all the ones that I want to.
For now, I’m back to give you a look at 8 more burgers I have tried, and hopefully it will point you in the right direction in terms of burger choices. Trust me when I say that you’re going to want to read this one, because there is some awesome burgers this time around!
Burger: Donair Burger – Flipburger’s famous patty topped with Tony’s Famous Donair meat, plus onions, tomatoes and Flipburger’s own chipotle mayo
Tempo is one of those places in Halifax that I’ve walked past many times but have never gone in there for a meal, with the exception of last Burger Week. When I visited during BW I wasn’t super impressed with the burger that they were offering, although it was my seventh burger of the day, so I like to give them the benefit of the doubt. I decided it was time to go back and give one of their regular menu burgers a try, and I figured I would go with their appropriately named Tempo Burger.
From the menu: “Oulton’s beef, aged cheddar, smoked tomato ketchup, candied bacon, fried onions, tempura pickle”
The day finally arrived. I put my Ambassador sash on (I won the title of Burger Ambassador after being selected by The Coast), and ventured out into the snow-filled city of Halifax, ready to embark on my week-long burger adventure. For day #1, I managed to get to 8 different restaurants to try their contributions for Burger Week. Joining me on the first leg was Olivia, Jordan, Savannah, Ryan, Don, Drew, Sacha, Ian, Nadine, and John, and the majority of them have already agreed to join me for most of Burger Week (they have been appropriately named “Team Life of Burgers”).
Burger #1 – The Classic from Bearly’s/Ace Burger
The Classic from Bearly’s/Ace Burger was a great choice for the first burger of the week. The burger was a hit with everyone at the table. The patty was so juicy, and had an awesome flavour to it. The addition of the dijonnaise was great as it really worked well with the patty. The group consensus was that the pickles were delicious and very welcome on this burger. I also really liked the bun because it tasted fresh, and it was the perfect size for this burger. For this burger, we were also joined by fellow Burger Ambassador Vicki, and last year’s Ambassador Lindsay, who runs the Eat This Town blog (look for her post about this meet-up!).
Savannah: “The beef used in this burger is delicious!”
Ryan: “I thought the composition of this burger was great”
