Halifax Burger Week – Day #4

Closing in on the midway point of Halifax Burger Week, it’s time for Day #4! Joining the team on this day was Jordan, Ryan, and Olivia.

Burger #26 – Jalapeño Beer Cheeseburger from Elle’s Bistro

Elle's Bistro

Starting the day off was the Jalapeño Beer Cheeseburger from Elle’s Bistro. Obviously, the first thing I noticed was the onion rings (if you have been reading my other posts you should know of my love for them by now). They did offer a great crunch to the burger which was really nice. I did like the use of cheese sauce in lieu of a traditional cheese slice. However, it was advertised as a jalapeño cheese sauce, but I didn’t really taste any heat at all. The patty itself was cooked really nicely, and my only complaint is that I would have like to taste a bit more seasoning. The texture of the top bun was really great, and it was one of my favourite parts. Overall, this was a decent burger, but not amazing.

Halifax Burger Week – Day #3

Halifax Burger Week is in full swing and it was time to venture out into the city for Day #3! Joining Team Life of Burgers this time was Olivia, Savannah, Jordan, Nadine, and Elaine.

Burger #17 – Peanut Butter Burger from Darrell’s

Darrell's

The Peanut Butter Burger from Darrell’s is a regular menu item and it is hugely popular within Halifax. I, however, have never been a huge fan of it. Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with it, I just don’t really enjoy the combination of peanut butter with their patty. I do, however, think that their patty is pretty good (I’ve had other burgers that use the same patty). With this burger, I also really enjoyed the bun, and it was able to hold up when faced with the peanut butter and burger juices that this burger provides. This burger seems to have a pretty big fan base, so if you think it is something you would like, you should definitely try it and form your own opinion.

Savannah: “I really liked the peanut butter as it wasn’t too sweet, and it worked well with the bacon”

Halifax Burger Week – Day #2

After a successful Day #1 (despite the weather trying to sabotage that), it was time to move on to Day #2! Joining the Life of Burgers team on the second day was Olivia, Jordan, Drew, Savannah, Ryan, Ian, and Sacha.

Burger #9 – Deli Burger from Rogue’s Roost

Rogue's Roost

The Deli Burger from Rogue’s Roost provided us with another solid start to our day. The coleslaw stole the show, and I really enjoyed how it accompanied the patty of the burger. The creamy crunch that it gave was awesome! The smoked meat was something I have never had on a burger, but it gave a new dimension of meat that was very much welcome. I really liked the texture of the bun, but there was mixed feelings from the others at the table. Overall, this burger should probably be on your Burger Week list.

Drew: “I thought the smoked meat to burger patty ratio would be off, but the portioning was actually perfect”

Halifax Burger Week – Day #1

The day finally arrived. I put my Ambassador sash on (I won the title of Burger Ambassador after being selected by The Coast), and ventured out into the snow-filled city of Halifax, ready to embark on my week-long burger adventure. For day #1, I managed to get to 8 different restaurants to try their contributions for Burger Week. Joining me on the first leg was Olivia, Jordan, Savannah, Ryan, Don, Drew, Sacha, Ian, Nadine, and John, and the majority of them have already agreed to join me for most of Burger Week (they have been appropriately named “Team Life of Burgers”).

Burger #1 – The Classic from Bearly’s/Ace Burger

Bearly's

The Classic from Bearly’s/Ace Burger was a great choice for the first burger of the week. The burger was a hit with everyone at the table. The patty was so juicy, and had an awesome flavour to it. The addition of the dijonnaise was great as it really worked well with the patty. The group consensus was that the pickles were delicious and very welcome on this burger. I also really liked the bun because it tasted fresh, and it was the perfect size for this burger. For this burger, we were also joined by fellow Burger Ambassador Vicki, and last year’s Ambassador Lindsay, who runs the Eat This Town blog (look for her post about this meet-up!).

Savannah: “The beef used in this burger is delicious!”

Ryan: “I thought the composition of this burger was great”

Burger #30 – Smokehouse (2 Doors Down)

Halifax may be still recovering from the layer of ice that it was covered in recently, but that doesn’t mean the burger life has to slow down any! As of late, there has been a lot of burger excitement throughout Halifax with the upcoming Halifax Burger Week. The Coast is once again doing their Burger Week from March 19th – 25th, which is a great opportunity to both try some of the best restaurants in the city, as well as stuff your face with as many different burgers as possible. Right now, you can even go on Twitter or Instagram and show your support for who you think should be the Burger Ambassador for the week (maybe a certain Halifax-based burger blogger *wink wink nudge nudge*), which gives two lucky people the chance to cover burger week, and report back to the public all the meaty details!

With Burger Week on the mind, it is a perfect time for me to get my next burger, which just so happens to be #30! For this one, I decided to go with a burger, that is one of the ones that gets most recommended to me, from the downtown restaurant 2 Doors Down. Located at 1533 Barrington Street, 2DD is still a fairly new addition to Halifax, but has received many rave reviews from Halifax diners. After hearing lots of praise for it, I knew it was time to get myself a Smokehouse burger.

Burger #29 – Piggy-Back Burger (Darrell’s)

There is nothing more exciting, for someone in my position, then when you hear of a new burger that has come to a local restaurant. A new burger can end up being a hit or miss, but either way, it’s still another chance to sink my teeth into a potential new favourite. While doing some burger research (we all have our hobbies) I came across a new burger on the menu at Darrell’s Restaurant. Located at 5576 Fenwick Street, this was my second visit to Darrell’s since starting this blog (my first was actually for the premier burger for LoB). Having heard nothing about this new creation, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to get my hands on the Piggy-Back Burger.

Burger #28 – Bacon Cheese (Krave Burger)

With the new year in full swing, it’s time to up my burger game. I have a few different ideas that I’m going to try out for the blog this year, so stay tuned for that!

For now, it’s time to get back to trying out some more burgers that this town has to offer. For the first burger of the year, I decided to try out a place that I (surprisingly) have yet to step foot in. Krave Burger, located at 5680 Spring Garden Road, is a new addition to the Halifax restaurant scene, and has become a pretty popular place. Specializing primarily in burgers, they have options for beef, chicken, and veggie lovers alike. For my first visit, I went with their Bacon Cheese Burger.

Burger #27 – Beef and Bacon (The Stubborn Goat)

With the hustle and bustle of the Christmas/New Years season over, I can finally get back to the burger life! My first post for 2015 (but admittedly not my first burger as I technically ate this one in 2014) deals with a burger that comes from The Stubborn Goat. Located at 1579 Grafton Street, The Stubborn Goat is a fairly new addition to the Downtown Halifax restaurant scene. With a few different options on their menu, I settled on the Beef and Bacon Burger.

From the menu: “House pickle, brie, bacon, lettuce, tomato, garlic aioli”

Burger #26 – Cannon Burger (The Loose Cannon)

My second favourite thing about getting to do this blog, the first being that I get to eat really tasty burgers, is that it takes me to new places that I have never been to before. This was the case with burger #26. Located at 1566 Argyle Street, The Loose Cannon is a place that I have walked past numerous times, but never actually walked through the doors. Since they only have one burger on their menu, I knew I was going to be trying their Cannon Burger.

Stats

From the menu: “Ground chuck seasoned to perfection, garnished with mayo, tomato, lettuce and a pickle. Served on a fresh kaiser roll and accompanied with either hand cut chips or house salad”

Burger #25 – South Western (Flipburger)

With the cold weather approaching, there is nothing like a tasty burger to warm you up, or at least fill your stomach with some delicious meaty goodness. Looking for a quick bite to eat for lunch, I headed back to 1565 Argyle Street, where Flipburger is located. With multiple signature burgers to pick from, I decided it was time to cross the South Western off my list.

Stats

From the menu: “Guacamole, Oulton’s double smoked bacon, jalapeño, haystack onions, lettuce, tomato and spicy Monterey jack”
