Burger #28 – Bacon Cheese (Krave Burger)

With the new year in full swing, it’s time to up my burger game. I have a few different ideas that I’m going to try out for the blog this year, so stay tuned for that!

For now, it’s time to get back to trying out some more burgers that this town has to offer. For the first burger of the year, I decided to try out a place that I (surprisingly) have yet to step foot in. Krave Burger, located at 5680 Spring Garden Road, is a new addition to the Halifax restaurant scene, and has become a pretty popular place. Specializing primarily in burgers, they have options for beef, chicken, and veggie lovers alike. For my first visit, I went with their Bacon Cheese Burger.

Stats

From the menu: “Krave Burger (Beef Patty, Krave sauce, mustard, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle) topped with local Shoulder Bacon and Cheddar”

Appearance (7/10)

My initial impression of this burger was pretty positive. The thing that stood out the most to me was how juicy the patty looked. This burger had the appearance of a more greasy diner-style burger, as opposed to a more gourmet one, which isn’t necessarily an issue at all. I also opted to add an onion ring to mine, and I was glad to see that it was a nice thick cut ring and not a small pathetic one that some places offer.

Taste (8/10)

I had heard mixed reviews of Krave, so I was pretty curious as to how it would hold up to other burgers that this town has provided me in the past. The moment of truth was upon me as I took my first bite. Right after that bite, I immediately had to take another. The 100% beef patty was cooked just enough to keep it juicy and flavourful, and was far from being dry and bland. The portions of the toppings on the burger were just right, and nothing was too overpowering. The onions were great, and the shoulder bacon really kicked the meaty deliciousness up a few notches. I was really happy that I got the onion ring on the burger (if you’re a frequent Life of Burgers reader you know that I’m a huge supporter of rings on burgers), and I think next time I will get onions rings as my side, as opposed to the poutine I got for this visit. The Krave sauce was also really nice, and I think next time I will ask for a bit extra to be put on.

Restaurant Atmosphere & Service (7.75/10)

When you walk into Krave, you go up to the counter and place your order (it honestly took me a while to figure out exactly what I wanted to get). You then sit at your table and your food is brought to you in a pretty timely manner. We interacted with a couple of different employees there, and they were both really nice and seemed genuinely concerned with the food being to our liking. The restaurant itself was very clean in appearance, and it still had a very new and fresh vibe to it. They also offer outlets to charge your various smartphones, which has nothing to do with burgers, but it is a cool idea.

Cost vs. What You Get (7/10)

The cost of the burger by itself is $7.99. If you want to make it a combo and/or get something changed/added on, it will cost you a bit more (for example, each onion ring you want to add will cost you 75 cents, and to make it a combo is another $3.49). I honestly did not have an issue with their pricing at all. The meat is all locally sourced, and the burger itself is a pretty damn good time.

Overall (7.44/10)

If you are looking for a high-end, gourmet burger, this isn’t the place for you. If you are looking for a delicious, juicy burger, with local ingredients and near-perfect portioning, then you are going to want to check this place out. The burgers give an almost homemade feeling, and it can act as both comfort food, as well as a relaxed and casual dining experience.
