When I went overseas this past December to England and Ireland, the burger choices were plentiful. So plentiful in fact that I split my thoughts on them into two separate posts! If you want to read about the burgers in England, check out Part 1, or you can read on and see all the delicious burgers that Ireland cooked up for me (plus a bonus burger in Boston!).
Life of Burgers has been pretty quiet lately, but all for good reasons! In July I managed to snag a position working on the new TV series The Mist that filmed in Nova Scotia for 4 months, which was pretty exciting (especially since the NS film/television industry has had it rough over the last year or so), but it kept me very busy and burgers had to be put on hold for a bit.
About a week after the show wrapped, I took a much-needed vacation ‘across the pond’ for a couple weeks in England and Ireland. While there was many awesome and iconic things to see and do in these beautiful countries, I obviously had to take some time to dive into the beefier side of things and see how much burger game they could bring to the table.
I managed to get my hands on 11 different burgers on my trip, and Part 1 is going to showcase 5 of these meaty creations!
Voting is now open for The Coast’s Best of Halifax 2016 Awards! If you could take a minute and head over to the voting page and vote Life of Burgers for Best Food Blogger, I would be extremely grateful! Thanks!
The warm and sunny days have finally arrived in Halifax, and it’s a great time to be a food-lover in the city. Patios are open, and nothing beats the heat like a cold beer and some tasty eats. I finally had some spare time (it’s been a busy past few weeks for me), so obviously getting a burger was high on my list of things to do. I noticed that Gahan House had added a new burger to their menu since the last time I was there, so I decided to give the Brewmaster’s Burger a try.
From the menu: “Atlantic beef, Gahan cheese sauce, Montreal smoked bacon, onion jam, Porter mustard, buffalo ketchup, tomato, lettuce, pickle, Iron Bridge bun”
The weather is getting (somewhat) warmer, restaurants are setting up their patios, and I’ve finally recovered from the piles of delicious burgers that I devoured during Halifax Burger Week and PEI Burger Love! Not wanting to waste any time getting the Summer burger season underway, I stopped in at Flipburger on Argyle to try out The MacDaddy!
From the menu: “Deep fried mac & cheese, pulled pork, spicy ketchup, pickled onions and grilled tomato”
With February in full swing, the best time of the year is almost here! That’s right, Halifax Burger Week is just around the corner, and in true Life of Burgers spirit, I’ve been warming up my stomach for the huge event.
Elle’s Bistro is a cozy brunch and lunch spot, nestled in the middle of Barrington Street, and they just so happen to have a bunch of delicious-sounding burgers on their menu. My first experience here was during last years Burger Week, and at that time they were fairly new to Halifax. I decided it was time to make a return visit, and although it was a tough decision, I ended up going with the Sweet & Smokey Bacon Brat Burger.
From the menu: “Smokey burger topped with bacon, bratwurst and sharp cheddar”
Tempo is one of those places in Halifax that I’ve walked past many times but have never gone in there for a meal, with the exception of last Burger Week. When I visited during BW I wasn’t super impressed with the burger that they were offering, although it was my seventh burger of the day, so I like to give them the benefit of the doubt. I decided it was time to go back and give one of their regular menu burgers a try, and I figured I would go with their appropriately named Tempo Burger.
From the menu: “Oulton’s beef, aged cheddar, smoked tomato ketchup, candied bacon, fried onions, tempura pickle”
It’s always exciting when a new restaurant opens in the city. It’s even more exciting for me when they include a brand new burger on their menu! Black Sheep recently opened their doors on Dresden Row and they boast “Brunch by day. Small plates, craft beer, and cocktails by night”, which is a statement that is sure to please both early risers and night owls alike. I was not expecting a brunch place to serve a burger, but I was pleasantly surprised to see one pop up on the premiere menu. Simply titled “Burger” (it’s only a matter of time before they give it a SHEEPish name), it is a breakfast inspired meal that I knew I just had to try!
From the menu: “house ground beef, English muffin, fried egg, aioli, fontina, tomato, iceberg lettuce”
Not wanting to waste an opportunity to try another Burger Love winner (check out Burger #51 for more info on Burger Love!) while home on Prince Edward Island, I decided to head over to Papa Joe’s to try their 2012 champ, The Goddess. This family friendly restaurant was fairly busy when I visited, so that was a good sign that I was in for some quality food!
From the menu: “Mediterranean seasoned Island beef on a toasted ciabatta bun with zatar, garlic sauce, feta cheese, banana peppers, lettuce and tomato”
While Halifax has a week every year where they celebrate burgers, Prince Edward Island raises the bar even higher by devoting a whole month to the beefy creation. Occurring during the month of April every year, PEI Burger Love has Islanders swarming to participating restaurants to sink their teeth into the various original creations that each location has to offer.
Given the fact that I am from PEI, and my obvious love for burgers, you would assume that I have participated in Burger Love. However, since its debut in 2011 I have yet to be able to make it over for the excitement of it all. Luckily, some restaurants who have a winning burger (as voted by diners) keep their burger on the regular menu so people can go back and enjoy it any time of the year. While home over the Christmas break I seized the opportunity to try the 2014 Burger Love winner, which is titled The Gatsby, from Sims Corner.
“7oz. PEI Beef Patty, maple chipotle bacon, pulled pork, smokey gouda, chipotle aioli & pea shoots”
Before I get into the delicious details of this burger, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that supported Life of Burgers over 2015. It was a great year for LOB, from being the Burger Week Ambassador to winning a Best of Halifax Award, and all the awesome stuff in between. I’m extremely grateful that you all have put up with my burger addiction and have given me so much positive feedback! Here’s to a great, burger-filled 2016!
A big milestone has been reached for Life of Burgers with the arrival of burger number 50! For this one I wanted to leave it up to my readers so I conducted a poll on Twitter where everyone could pick, from 4 local burgers, what they wanted number 50 to be.
From the menu: “2 seared beef patties, cheddar, mozza, smokey shoulder bacon, pulled pork, onions, ketchup, mustard and Krave sauce, with a grilled cheese in the middle of it all”
