Burger #50 – The Big Cheese (Krave)

Before I get into the delicious details of this burger, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that supported Life of Burgers over 2015. It was a great year for LOB, from being the Burger Week Ambassador to winning a Best of Halifax Award, and all the awesome stuff in between. I’m extremely grateful that you all have put up with my burger addiction and have given me so much positive feedback! Here’s to a great, burger-filled 2016!

A big milestone has been reached for Life of Burgers with the arrival of burger number 50! For this one I wanted to leave it up to my readers so I conducted a poll on Twitter where everyone could pick, from 4 local burgers, what they wanted number 50 to be.

It was back and forth between Cheese Curds and Krave but eventually Krave took the win with 57% of the vote, and it was time for me to prepare for the burger beast that is The Big Cheese!

Stats

From the menu: “2 seared beef patties, cheddar, mozza, smokey shoulder bacon, pulled pork, onions, ketchup, mustard and Krave sauce, with a grilled cheese in the middle of it all”

Burger #49 – Big Devil Burger (Baton Rouge)

During Halifax Burger Week, some of the participating restaurants opted to have one of their regular menu burgers be their entry for the week. One of these places was Baton Rouge. The name of this burger was titled the Big Devil Burger, and since no one had anything bad to say about it at the time, I figured it was time to go back and give it its own LoB write-up!

Stats

From the menu: “Half-pound of premium beef, fried onion rings, tomato, Swiss cheese, smoked bacon, sweet & spicy BBQ sauce”

Burger #47 – South West Burger (Your Father’s Moustache)

I’m quickly closing in on burger #50, and I’m pretty excited to reach this milestone! I’m not quite there yet though, so it’s time to get to work. For #47 I headed back to Your Father’s Moustache for my third burger from here; a burger hat-trick if you will. They have a section on their menu that’s completely devoted to burgers, and this time I decided to go with the South West Burger.

Stats

From the menu: “100% pure beef patty grilled with Bull’s-Eye BBQ sauce, and topped with sauteed chipotle onions, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, and pickle”

Burger #45 – Burger Platter (Maxwell’s Plum)

When a place proclaims that one of their menu items is “the best in town”, you expect a pretty tasty time. Maxwell’s Plum, located at 1600 Grafton Street, has a huge selection of beer to choose from, and they just so happen to claim that they have the best burger platter in town. Obviously, I had to go and check out this burger platter for myself.

Stats

From the menu: “Maxwell’s 1/2 pound signature burger patty. Served on a sesame seed bun with romaine lettuce, red onion and a thick slice of ripe tomato” – I also added bacon and cheese to mine.

Burger #44 – Pulled Pork Burger (Niche)

First off, I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who voted for me for Food Blogger in The Coast’s Best Of Awards. I was both surprised and thankful when I was told I had won Silver, and it means a lot to have people who like reading about my burger endeavors. Big congrats as well to both the Gold winner, Lindsay Nelson (Eat This Town), and the Bronze winner, Kathy Jollimore (Eat Halifax)!

Next burger up comes from Niche Lounge in downtown Halifax. Located at 1505 Barrington Street, Niche is a popular place to grab dinner or a drink, and it is especially popular in the summer when people crowd their large patio to watch various sporting events on the big screen. They have a variety of burgers to choose from, and for this visit, I went with their Pulled Pork Burger.

Stats

From the menu: “Fresh ground beef, barbecue pulled pork, smoked mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, homemade chipotle barbecue sauce”

Burger #43 – Porkey & The Beef (Gahan House)

During Burger Week, I had the pleasure of trying a lot of amazing burgers. Some were beautifully simple, while some had the perfect combination of toppings on top of a delicious patty. An example of the latter was Gahan House. Located on the Halifax Waterfront, at 1869 Upper Water Street, Gahan House created an awesome burger that just so happened to make my top 3 of the week. Thankfully, they decided to make the burger a regular menu item, and I figured it was time to go and try the Porkey & The Beef burger again.

Stats

From the menu: “House Ground Atlantic beef, local pulled pork, 1772 IPA BBQ sauce, maple white balsamic onion jam, panko fried pickle, local bacon, ADL cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, roasted garlic aioli, Iron Bridge brown ale bun”

Burger #42 – Steakhouse Burger (Krave)

Being someone that is always on the lookout for the next great meal, it is really exciting when a place changes up and/or adds new items to their menu. It’s even more exciting, for me personally, when those changes involve burgers, so it’s safe to say that when I heard about Krave’s new menu, I was very eager to see what they came up with.

Located at 5680 Spring Garden Road, Krave is a modern twist on a classic diner, and they have quickly built a huge fan-following since their opening. Their new menu provided a few new burger options for me to choose from, and I eventually settled on the Steakhouse Burger for this visit.

Stats

From the menu: “Seared beef patty, smokey shoulder bacon, mozza, sauteed mushrooms and onions, onion ring and smokey horseradish mayo”

Burger #41 – Smokehouse Burger (Athens)

Given the fact that burgers are such a popular food item, it seems that almost every restaurant nowadays has a burger on their menu. Even some places that specialize in certain foods will sometimes throw a burger on their menu as an option for a potential picky customer. While I’m all about a world full of burgers, this leaves a lot of opportunity for mediocre burgers, and nobody wants that.

One of the places that I was worried that this might be the case was Athens Restaurant. Located at 6273 Quinpool Road, Athens is known for its extensive Greek menu, as well as having a pretty great breakfast selection. I was apprehensive about going here specifically for a burger, but after they had a pretty good showing during Burger Week with their lamb burger, I figured it was only fair to give one of their regular menu items a shot.

Stats

From the menu: “6oz local, ground beef patty, BBQ sauce, mayo, smoked bacon, breaded onion ring & Swiss on a kaiser bun”

Burger #40 – Bacon Cheese Burger (The Wooden Monkey)

While the days might not be getting any cooler, Summer is slowly nearing its end. With the end of this season comes the end of the many awesome patios found in this city, so why not enjoy them while I still can! For my next patio visit, I made my way to 1707 Grafton Street where The Wooden Monkey is located. This was my first visit to this location (I visited the Dartmouth location during Burger Week) so I was eager to see what they had to offer in terms of burgers. I decided to go with their Bacon Cheese Burger.

Stats

From the menu: “Grilled 5oz. beef burger from Getaway Farm, caramelized onions, melted white cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, dill pickles and spicy mayo”

Burger #39 – Peanut Butter Burger (Darrell’s)

One burger fad that I have never been completely sold on is the use of peanut butter. I love both peanut butter and burgers so it would make sense that I would love them together, but that hasn’t necessarily been the case. That being said, I believe that somewhere out there is a burger with peanut butter on it that will blow my away. I decided to head to Darrell’s for their take on this combination. Located at 5576 Fenwick Street, Darrell’s Peanut Butter Burger has become a well known thing around Halifax, so I figured it was only right to start my search here.

Stats

From the menu: “Our traditional BLTCM burger (bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheddar, mayo, mustard, relish, and ketchup) with that stick to the roof of your mouth difference”
