Halifax Burger Week 2016 Preview – Part 1

It’s that time of year again! Halifax Burger Week is now less than a week away, and social media is buzzing with excitement. With 59 restaurants participating last year, I didn’t think that this event could get any bigger, but The Coast got to work and they have a whopping 79 restaurants involved this year! With more options to choose from than ever, I wanted to give an early look into some of the delicious burgers that you can sink your teeth into this upcoming March 18th-24th.

I had a great response from restaurants that wanted to be involved, so much so that I’m breaking this ‘Preview Series’ up into multiple parts! For the premiere, I’ve included the Burger Week offerings from Krave Burger, Niche Lounge, and Hali Deli. From what I’ve experienced so far, it’s looking like this year’s Burger Week is going to be extremely tasty! But enough with the talk! Here are the first three burgers in the Life of Burgers Halifax Burger Week 2016 Preview!

Halifax Burger Week Wrap-Up

Well, Halifax Burger Week has come and gone, and man was it a meaty adventure! This year the city of Halifax had 59 different burgers to offer for the week, and I managed to try every single one of them. That’s right, I devoted my whole week to this endeavour and I was determined to conquer the week!

It all started with a contest that was put on by The Coast to find two “Burger Ambassadors” who would be in charge of going out and documenting their Halifax Burger Week experience through Twitter and Instagram. They wanted to see your “burger selfie”, and even though I did that, it was only the beginning of my quest to become Ambassador.

Halifax Burger Week – Day #7

The final day of Burger Week had finally come, and I was both sad and relieved to be ending this meaty journey. Either way, there was still 7 burgers standing in the way of me reaching my goal, so we ventured back into this wonderful city. Joining me on Day #7 was Don, Olivia, Nadine, Rachel, Ryan, and Jordan.

Burger #53 – Lumberjack Burger from Kempster’s

Kempster's

We started the day off with a breakfast of burger proportions. Between the French-toasted bun, was a breakfast fit for a king, or in this case, a Burger Ambassador. The egg was a very welcome addition (as always), and there was tons of bacon piled on top of the cheesy patty. The maple mayo was super delicious, and it was as if the burger had maple syrup drizzled on it. The French-toasted bun was great, and it provided an inventive alternative to your typical toasted bun. This burger, with it breakfast influences, was a really tasty time.

Don: “The patty made me think of a good traditional diner burger”

Halifax Burger Week – Day #6

The second last day of Burger Week brought yet another busy day of burgering. This time, the team ventured around Dartmouth to try out 9 different burgers. Joining me on Day #6 was Olivia, Jordan, Ryan, and Don.

Burger #44 – Jamieson’s Irish House & Grill

Jamieson's

There was a bit of confusion with this burger, as a lot of people thought it was a vegetarian option, given the description (“zesty black bean tomato and lime chilli burger”). It was in fact a beef burger with chilli on top of it (no complaints here). The patty was seasoned nicely, even though it was a done a little more than I would have liked, but still pretty decent. The chilli was delicious and I really liked it in conjunction with the patty. There was a perfect amount of veggies on the burger, and in terms of the bun, it had the perfect level of flakiness which made it have a great texture. This was a pretty good burger all around.

Halifax Burger Week – Day #5

Over halfway through of Burger Week, and I’m still going strong! Joining me for Day #5 was Keegan, Jordan, and Olivia.

Burger #35 – Bourbon Bacon Jack Burger from Cheachie’s

Cheachie's

We arrived at Cheachie’s and they informed us that they weren’t making their Burger Week burgers for that day. Eventually, they gave in and said they would make them for us (is there anything this Ambassador sash can’t do?). The patty was cooked pretty nicely, and had a good char. I really enjoyed the bourbon sauce, and it was a taste I have yet to experience on a burger so it was a new welcome experience. The bun was ok, but it did have a bit of a problem holding together. I also would have liked a different style of onions, as the yellow onions were the wrong flavour for this burger. Overall, this burger fell in the middle of all the burgers I’ve had so far this week.

Halifax Burger Week – Day #4

Closing in on the midway point of Halifax Burger Week, it’s time for Day #4! Joining the team on this day was Jordan, Ryan, and Olivia.

Burger #26 – Jalapeño Beer Cheeseburger from Elle’s Bistro

Elle's Bistro

Starting the day off was the Jalapeño Beer Cheeseburger from Elle’s Bistro. Obviously, the first thing I noticed was the onion rings (if you have been reading my other posts you should know of my love for them by now). They did offer a great crunch to the burger which was really nice. I did like the use of cheese sauce in lieu of a traditional cheese slice. However, it was advertised as a jalapeño cheese sauce, but I didn’t really taste any heat at all. The patty itself was cooked really nicely, and my only complaint is that I would have like to taste a bit more seasoning. The texture of the top bun was really great, and it was one of my favourite parts. Overall, this was a decent burger, but not amazing.

Halifax Burger Week – Day #3

Halifax Burger Week is in full swing and it was time to venture out into the city for Day #3! Joining Team Life of Burgers this time was Olivia, Savannah, Jordan, Nadine, and Elaine.

Burger #17 – Peanut Butter Burger from Darrell’s

Darrell's

The Peanut Butter Burger from Darrell’s is a regular menu item and it is hugely popular within Halifax. I, however, have never been a huge fan of it. Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with it, I just don’t really enjoy the combination of peanut butter with their patty. I do, however, think that their patty is pretty good (I’ve had other burgers that use the same patty). With this burger, I also really enjoyed the bun, and it was able to hold up when faced with the peanut butter and burger juices that this burger provides. This burger seems to have a pretty big fan base, so if you think it is something you would like, you should definitely try it and form your own opinion.

Savannah: “I really liked the peanut butter as it wasn’t too sweet, and it worked well with the bacon”

Halifax Burger Week – Day #2

After a successful Day #1 (despite the weather trying to sabotage that), it was time to move on to Day #2! Joining the Life of Burgers team on the second day was Olivia, Jordan, Drew, Savannah, Ryan, Ian, and Sacha.

Burger #9 – Deli Burger from Rogue’s Roost

Rogue's Roost

The Deli Burger from Rogue’s Roost provided us with another solid start to our day. The coleslaw stole the show, and I really enjoyed how it accompanied the patty of the burger. The creamy crunch that it gave was awesome! The smoked meat was something I have never had on a burger, but it gave a new dimension of meat that was very much welcome. I really liked the texture of the bun, but there was mixed feelings from the others at the table. Overall, this burger should probably be on your Burger Week list.

Drew: “I thought the smoked meat to burger patty ratio would be off, but the portioning was actually perfect”
